Zebra Stone

Other Silicates & Gemstones

Zebra stone, or zebra rock, is a locality-named ornamental siltstone rather than a mineral species. It consists of ivory, quartz-rich clay crossed by rhythmic reddish-brown hematite bands, spots, rods, and other patterns whose exact formation mechanism is still debated.

Origins

Australia

Appearance & optical properties

cream and chocolate-brown zebra-striped stone.

History & discovery

Scientific literature first mentioned zebra rock in 1924. It is confined to small outcrops in the East Kimberley and Lake Argyle catchment of northwestern Australia; proposed explanations for its patterns include iron movement in ancient acidic soils and chemical banding during later fluid alteration, and research continues to test these models.

Uses & care

Common uses
Its contrasting natural patterns are displayed in polished slabs, jewelry, carvings, ornaments, and architectural features such as Kununurra's historic Zebra Rock Bar.
