Appearance & optical properties
opaque-to-translucent milky white chalcedony.
History & discovery
The name chalcedony comes from Latin chalcedonius and has traditionally been linked, though not with certainty, to the ancient town of Chalcedon in Asia Minor. A surviving Roman ring from the first half of the first century CE shows that pale chalcedony was already being carved as a gem material.
Uses & care
- Common uses
- Tough, evenly colored chalcedony is cut into cabochons for jewelry and carved into beads, seals, cameos, small figures, and ornamental objects.
- Handling and cleaning
- Clean with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft brush. Store it away from harder stones to prevent scratches, and use gentler cleaning if the piece has fractures or delicate carving.
