History & discovery
Aventurine is a rock variety rather than a distinct mineral. Its name comes from the Italian expression a ventura, meaning “by chance,” and was applied to the natural material because its scattered reflective grains create a distinctive sparkle.
Uses & care
- Common uses
- Red aventurine is polished into cabochons, beads, spheres, figurines, bowls, and other ornaments; broader surfaces show its evenly scattered glitter most clearly.
- Handling and cleaning
- Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. The quartz-rich rock resists ordinary scratches, but protect it from hard impacts, abrasive cleaners, steam, ultrasonic cleaning, and rapid temperature changes.
