History & discovery
Mineralogists use “phantom” for the visible outline of an earlier stage inside a later crystal. The name describes a growth feature rather than a separate quartz species: each nested silhouette records where a crystal face was temporarily coated before growth resumed.

- Clear examples are cut as cabochons or faceted stones, while sharply defined nested phantoms are collected as mineral specimens that display crystal growth history.
- Handling and cleaning
- Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Quartz is hard but brittle, and included or internally fractured pieces can be vulnerable to impact, steam, ultrasonic cleaning, and sudden temperature change.
