History & discovery
The old name Mocha stone refers to the Arabian port of Mocha in present-day Yemen, once a source of the material. The mosslike markings were formerly mistaken for preserved plants, but they are mineral inclusions within silica. The modern name preserves that visual comparison without implying an organic origin.
