Appearance & optical properties

opaque mustard, burgundy and cream mookaite bands.

History & discovery

The name comes from the Mooka Creek area in Western Australia. Its host unit, the Lower Cretaceous Windalia Radiolarite, was named in 1954; near Mooka Creek, surface silicification produced the red, yellow, cream, and burgundy ornamental material now identified by the local name in the lapidary trade.

Uses & care

Common uses
Mookaite takes a smooth polish and is cut into cabochons, beads, spheres, small carvings, display pieces, and decorative slabs for lapidary work.
