Bismuth Crystal
High-end Mineral Specimens
This catalogue entry represents native bismuth, a naturally occurring elemental mineral. Natural specimens are usually silvery white to reddish and may form granular, platy or branching masses; the vivid rainbow stair-step appearance associated with the name is not a distinct natural mineral variety.

Appearance & optical properties
metallic rainbow bismuth with stepped hopper geometry.
History & discovery
Bismuth metal has been known since ancient times but was long confused with lead and tin. Georgius Agricola treated it as a distinct metal in 1546. Its present name probably developed from German words associated with a white mass, although the exact origin remains uncertain.
Uses & care
- Common uses
- Native bismuth is collected as a mineral specimen. Refined bismuth is used in low-melting alloys, pigments, cosmetics and medicines, and in applications where it replaces lead.
- Handling and cleaning
- Handle native bismuth gently and store it dry. The metal is brittle and relatively soft, so protect edges and crystal surfaces from drops, rubbing and harder minerals; avoid acids and abrasive or ultrasonic cleaning.

Iridescent Hopper Ring
Ring
A ring set with a lab-grown bismuth hopper crystal whose stepped faces shimmer in gold, blue and magenta. None of the colours are paint; they rise from a thin oxide skin.

Rainbow Staircase Pendant
Pendant
A pendant holding a single large bismuth crystal, its nested squares flashing through the whole spectrum. The mineral's geometry makes a natural labyrinth.

Chromatic Ladder Earrings
Earrings
A pair of drop earrings hung with slender bismuth crystals, each one raked with rainbow iridescence. They move with every turn of the head.

Labyrinth Brooch
Brooch
An imagined brooch built round a bismuth hopper crystal, its stepped squares spiralling inward like a rainbow maze.

Rainbow Ziggurat Crown
Crown
An imagined crown built from bismuth hopper crystals, stepped like temple towers and shining in rainbow colours.
